Camila Giorgi, former 26th player in the world, ended her career in total discretion. She would have fled Italy in a hurry, to escape the Guardia di Finanza, the customs and financial police of her country.

Italian Camila Giorgi, 32, is no longer a professional tennis player. The one who won four singles titles (Bos-le-Duc, Linz, Mérida and the Masters 1000 in Montreal), and reached the quarter-finals at Wimbledon, hung up her racket in total anonymity.

How do we know? Italian newspapers, notably La Gazzetta dello Sportnoted that Giorgi was no longer on the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) lists. The body manages the anti-corruption and anti-doping programs in world tennis, and therefore asks athletes to specify their location, so that they can be monitored at any time.

A listing which apparently was not to Camila Giorgi’s taste, as local media report that she was seeking to flee – without a trace – in an attempt to evade the Italian tax authorities.

The Guardia di Finanza has in fact been searching for her and her family for some time in order to provide them with documents relating to taxation. The player, whose career prize money exceeds six million dollars, would not have declared a large part of her winnings. We are talking about a devilishly large tax debt, so much so that the Agenzia delle Entrate, responsible for guaranteeing compliance with taxpayers’ tax obligations, sent the Italian Tennis and Padel Federation (FITP) a notice of seizure on the player’s awards almost a year ago.

More recently, on April 13, the Italian financial police allegedly summoned Camila Giorgi, without her appearing. Since then, no one has heard from the former world No. 26 and those close to her: her father, mother and brothers.

When they learned that Giorgi was no longer on the ITIA lists, both the WTA and the Italian Tennis Federation sought contact with the athlete. In vain – no way to communicate with her.

Faced with the facts relayed in the Italian press, Camila Giorgi broke her silence and reacted by publishing a story on her Instagram account on Saturday. Problems with the Italian tax authorities were not discussed – the player simply took the time to announce her retirement to “her beloved fans”, clarifying that the rest was just rumours.

“For the latest news, only follow my Instagram page, everything that comes out is false. There have been many inaccuracies regarding my future plans. I look forward to sharing information with you about my upcoming opportunities. It is a joy to share my life with you. Let’s continue this journey together”

The player’s last traces lead us to San Diego, California. However, it is likely that Giorgi flew to Argentina, her father’s country. Because for now, the Giorgis no longer seem to have any links with Italy. They would own nothing, no real estate, not even the villa in which they lived near Florence, which was therefore rented.

The Brentwood Town goalkeeper was keen for his team to maintain their advantage over Bury Town at the end of the match. Even if it means acting…

When a team leads, it very often happens that its players use little tricks to waste time. As a general rule, they pull up their socks, walk slowly or cool off before putting the ball back into play. The more cunning ones, for their part, collapse to the ground, as if overcome by cramps.
