Footballer Lucas Paquetá is accused of having received a yellow card on purpose in 4 matches to influence the betting market

The Football Association (FA), the body that organizes football leagues in England, on Thursday accused Brazilian midfielder Lucas Paquetá, who plays for London club West Ham, of violating the federation’s betting regulations. According to the FA, Paquetá received a yellow card on purpose in four Premier League matches (the top division of the English football championship) played by West Ham between 2022 and 2023, respectively against Leicester City, Aston Villa, Leeds and Bournemouth, for « influence the sports betting market.”

In essence, the FA claims that in these matches Paquetá would have voluntarily committed fouls to receive yellow cards (the second most serious sanction with which one can be punished by the referee during a football match, after the red card) and thus win the money bet by him and other people on his booking.

The charges relate to an investigation that the FA opened last summer, which prevented Paquetá’s transfer to another Premier League team, Manchester City, with whom the player appeared to have reached an agreement. Paquetá is 26 years old, and has played for West Ham since 2022. In the 2019-2020 season he also played in Italy, for Milan.
