Premiere for FC Ingolstadt: The Schanzer win the state cup for the first time. A good argument for coach Sabrina Wittmann to be able to sit on the bench for a longer period of time.
Sabrina Wittmann is the first female coach to win a state football cup with a Bavarian men’s team. The interim coach of FC Ingolstadt and her team defeated the Würzburger Kickers 2-1 (1-1) on Saturday.
Saliou Sané had deservedly put the regional league champions in the lead after 25 minutes. Sebastian Grönning equalized out of nowhere just before half-time. Ryan Malone made the decisive goal in the 81st minute. It was the first cup win for the Schanzer, who were appearing in a final for the third time. Both teams were already confirmed as participants in the first round of the DFB Cup, as Würzburg had qualified directly as regional league champions.
Hair-raising defensive errors
The Kickers started with a lot of energy and created chance after chance. Aided by some hair-raising defensive errors from Ingolstadt, the hosts were repeatedly close to taking the lead, but often failed due to their own inability to finish or because of FCI goalkeeper Marius Funk. Even after taking the lead, Ingolstadt did not see much, which made the equalizer all the more surprising.

After the break, Ingolstadt became more active and contributed to a game worth watching. There were now chances on both sides. But in contrast to Ingolstadt, Würzburg was unable to beat Funk in the FCI goal despite having the best opportunities, who can be considered the father of the success.

For Würzburg, the defeat is quite bearable, as the focus is on the promotion relegation matches to the third division against Hannover 96 II on May 29 and June 2.
