FC St. Pauli’s Top Scorer Marcel Hartel Leaving Club After Bundesliga Return

After returning to the Bundesliga, FC St. Pauli will have to plan without its top scorer Marcel Hartel. As the local club announced on Thursday, the 28-year-old midfielder is leaving Hamburg after three years together. It is not yet known which club Hartel will move to.

Last season, Hartel scored 17 goals and prepared 13 more in 33 second division games. He played a significant role in the promotion and the championship in the 2nd league.

He played in four DFB Cup matches, scoring four goals and providing two assists.

“It’s not easy for me to take this step. But sometimes special opportunities arise in life,” said Hartel.

Sporting director Andreas Bornemann praised Hartel’s positive development: “He has become a leading player and, through his role in our game system, has also developed an enormous goal threat. We would have liked to have kept Marcel with us for longer, but we respect his decision to take a different path.”
