FC Bayern’s Goalkeeper Transfer Saga: Mamardashvili’s Near Move and Peretz’s Arrival

A year ago, FC Bayern was linked with several goalkeepers. One of them was apparently even very specific.

Before Manuel Neuer’s future beyond 2024 was clarified, FC Bayern considered several goalkeepers. Both Diogo Costa (FC Porto) and Gregor Kobel (Borussia Dortmund) were considered candidates for the German record champions. The talks with Giorgi Mamardashvili from FC Valencia were apparently even more concrete.

In an interview with the YouTube channel “Geo Team”, the Georgian revealed: “My father and my advisor were in Munich and conducted the final negotiations. I was already looking for a house in Munich in which I would live.”

Since Neuer ultimately stayed, extended his contract until 2025 and his injury healed well, FC Bayern opted for Daniel Peretz, who came to Munich as a substitute. The Munich team paid around five million euros for the Israeli from Maccabi Tel Aviv. A much cheaper solution than Mamardashvili, who would probably have cost more than 30 million euros.

“My future will be clear very soon”

Even without a move to Bayern, the 23-year-old remains one of the most sought-after goalkeepers in European football. In the summer of 2023, he already impressed at the U21 European Championship in his home country of Georgia. “My future will be clear very soon,” he revealed to “Geo Team”. Premier League club Newcastle United are also said to be interested in him.

For Mamardashvili, however, his own future is second priority for now. The European Championship in Germany with Georgia is first: “I’m not thinking about anything else now, because I have an important tournament with the Georgian national team ahead of me.” Georgia is playing in a group with Turkey, the Czech Republic and Portugal.
