Favorites Fall at ATP Masters in Rome: Medvedev Upset in Round of 16

The death of favorites at the ATP Masters in Rome continues. Daniil Medvedev was also caught in the round of 16.

The defending champion lost significantly in the round of 16 against the American Tommy Paul (ATP 16th) after just 74 minutes with 1:6, 4:6.

Medvedev got off to a good start in the game and took the serve from Paul right at the start. But the American hits back immediately and celebrates the rapid lead of the set with three breaks and six games en suite.

Zverev the last remaining favorite

In the second round, the Russian managed another break at the start, but again Paul’s answer didn’t take long to arrive. The 26-year-old takes Medvedev’s serve twice again and goes 4-2 in front.

Paul defended this lead confidently and used his first match point after 74 minutes to move into the quarter-finals. It is his first victory over Medvedev. In the round of the last eight, the American will now face Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz (ATP 9th), who was able to beat Sebastian Baez in just three sets.

With Alexander Zverev, who defeated Nuno Borges in two sets and Stefanos Tsitsipas, who swept over Alex de Minaur, two players from the top 8 on the seeding list confidently make it to the quarter-finals.
