Exciting Double Victory for Guggenberg Legionnaires in Baseball Bundesliga South

The first half of the top game four pack in the 1st Baseball Bundesliga South could hardly have gone better for the Guggenberg Legionnaires. In front of well-filled stands in the Armin Wolf Arena, the Regensburg team celebrated a dramatic 6:5 win against defending champions Heidenheim Heideköpfe.

The evening before, coach Martin Helmig’s team had already won by a narrow margin of 3-2. With the double victory, the Schwabelweiser extended their lead in the Baseball Bundesliga South.

In the best baseball weather on sunny Father’s Day, the Heideköpfe initially played spoilsport and took a 1-0 lead in the opening half against Legionnaires pitcher Scott Harkin. The home team countered in the third inning. Lou Helmig hammered the ball to the outfield fence, giving Marlon Jimenez the tying goal.

Life made difficult

One section later, Alexander Schmidt gave Regensburg its first lead of the afternoon with his solo home run into leftfield. Edoardo Cornelli and Schmidt even increased the score to 4:1 in the sixth inning. With victory in sight, the Upper Palatinate team made things difficult for themselves once again.

In the final round, the guests loaded the bases with no outs. The Regensburg defense around substitute Nick Miceli helped by making a risky decision. With the score at 4:2, Will Germaine stepped to bat and shocked the hosts and their fans with his three-run home run to make it 4:5.

However, this didn’t last too long. The legionnaires now had to, and they delivered. The Heidenheimers also wanted too much on defense and were confronted with full bases even if they were out. Eric Harms then heaved the ball into the outfield, out of reach of the Heideköpfe, Terrell Joyce and Matt Vance gave full throttle and secured the hosts’ much-celebrated victory. The entire team rushed onto the field and celebrated Harms, the hero of the day.

The encounter on Wednesday evening was a little less dramatic, but just as exciting. The reigning champions also presented in the first of the four meetings between the two heavyweights of the 1st Bundesliga South. It took until the fifth inning before the Schwabelweisers found the right answer: Antonio Torres tied the score at 1-1 with his solo home run. The American also marked the second Regensburg run with a Greek passport. Infielder Cornelli sent his teammate over the home base with a single.

Starker Cedano de Leon

Shortly afterwards, national player Schmidt made it 3-1. On the pitcher’s mound, Joe Cedano de Leon impressed again with seven strong innings (two hits, one walk, eight strikeouts). The Heidenheim team only managed to catch up against substitute James Larsen.
