European Paralympic Archery Championships Return to Rome: A Preview of the Event

The European Paralympic Archery Championships return to Rome from 20 to 24 May. The Capital hosts the continental para-archery event again after the one held in 2022, which adds to the organizational successes of the 2015 Youth Cup, the 2017 World Cup final and two editions of the Roma Archery Trophy, stages of the Indoor World Series , played in 2018 and 2019.
The Organizing Committee, supported by the Italian Archery Federation and World Archery Europe, relies on the proven experience gained on these previous occasions by Sante Spigarelli (President), Vittorio Polidori, Ardingo Scarzella and Aldo Pozzati. The COL enjoys the patronage of the Italian Paralympic Committee, the Lazio Region and Rome Capital, as well as the logistical support of the Military Sports Groups.

THE FINALS IN OSTIA ANTICA – The event will take place in two different competition locations: practice shots, ranking rounds and preliminary rounds will take place from 19 to 23 May at the Multifunctional Center of the State Police in Spinaceto (Via del Risaro 192/198, 00128 Rome), while the individual and team finals on Friday 24 May, the closing day of the event, in an iconic location to say the least, the Archaeological Park of Ostia Antica, which for the first time will be the stage for a major international competitive event .

THE PARTICIPANTS – There are 26 national teams participating in the European Championship and on the shooting line, accompanied by almost 90 technicians, there will be over 100 archers from the Recurve Open, Compound Open and W1 categories – those present at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games – in addition to the category Visually Impaired 1 (blind) and Visually Impaired 2/3 (visually impaired). These are the countries registered: Andorra, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Finland, France, Georgia, Germany, Great Britain, Greece, Ireland, Iceland , Italy, Latvia, the Netherlands, Poland, the Czech Republic, Romania, Slovakia, Spain, Switzerland, Turkey, Hungary and Ukraine.

LOGISTICS AND TRANSPORT – Logistics and transport will be managed thanks to the Military Sports Groups, using the means made available by the GSPD – Paralympic Defense Sports Group and by the Fiamme Oro – State Police Sports Group. For the management of the competition the Organizing Committee provides the presence of around 50 volunteers on each competition day, most of whom come from archery clubs in the region, but many will also come from other parts of Italy.

THE PROGRAM – The competition program foresees the arrival of the delegations on Saturday 18th May, with the official practice shots set for Sunday 19th. On Monday 20th the start of the 72 arrows of ranking round which establish the scoreboard of the direct clashes and on Tuesday 21st the competition it will get even more intense with the individual preliminaries up to the semi-finals. On Wednesday 22nd there will be space for the team (doubles) and mixed team preliminaries, in addition to the ranking round and the Visually Impaired preliminaries. All the finals for bronze will be held on Thursday 23 May, while on Friday 24 May the competition location will change: the closing of the event with the assignment of the European titles will take place in the archaeological site of Ostia Antica: in the morning, from 10:00 am , the finals for the individual continental gold and in the afternoon, from 3.00 pm, the team finals, with the closing ceremony scheduled for 5.30 pm.

AZZURRI ON THE FIELD FOR ANOTHER CHALLENGE – The Italian Para-Archery national team presents itself on the shooting line as one of the favorites to reach the podium in several competitions, following up on the successes obtained in 2023 at the World Championships in Pilsen and at the European Championships in Rotterdam, who brought a total of 9 passes to the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games. These are the archers who obtained the Paralympic qualification for Italy, all present on the shooting line in Rome followed by the Technical Director Willy Fuchsova and his staff: in the recurve open the outgoing European champion Elisabetta Mijno, Veronica Floreno and Stefano Travisani; in the compound open the world champion Matteo Bonacina, Eleonora Sarti and Giulia Pesci; in W1 Asia Pellizzari, Daila Dameno and Paolo Tonon.

THE EUROPEANS ON TV AND STREAMING – The individual finals on Friday 24 May from the Archaeological Park of Ostia Antica will be broadcast live on Rai Play from 11:00 to 12:30. Results, news and photographs will be published on the social channels and on the website of the Italian Archery Federation and World Archery Europe.
