On Thursday morning, former NBA guard and Dallas Mavericks player Delonte West was arrested. He had violated his probation and resisted arrest. ESPN reports.

West is currently being held at the Fairfax County Detention Center. His bail is set at $2,000. The former basketball player was discovered by police at 1 a.m. They then attempted to execute the arrest warrant against him, but were unsuccessful.

During the chase, West fled. The police lost sight of him and later found him unconscious.

Police said the ex-player was given the drug Narcan to treat a possible overdose, but that dose did not work and he was taken to a local hospital.

After a second, this time successful, treatment with Narcan, West was finally taken to the Fairfax County Detention Center.

NBA: A short average career

West was selected 24th overall in the first round of the 2004 NBA Draft by the Boston Celtics. He played for the Celtics until 2007, when he moved to the Seattle SuperSonics and finally to the Cleveland Cavaliers, where he played alongside LeBron James.

After three years in Cleveland, he returned to Boston for one season before ending his NBA career after a year with the Dallas Mavericks at the age of just 29. He then played in China.

During his career in the best basketball league in the world, West repeatedly attracted attention. This was also due to the fact that he suffered from bipolar disorder throughout his life.

In September 2009, he was given a suspended sentence. During a check for speeding on his motorcycle, the police found two pistols, a rifle and a knife.

As a result, Delonte West was sentenced to two years’ probation. He also had to wear an electronic bracelet for eight months, perform 40 hours of community service and undergo psychological counseling.

Two years later, in 2011, he announced that he was broke. He then applied for a job at the hardware store “Home Depot” during the NBA lockdown.

In a 2012 SPOX interview, he said: “Any job that helps you feed your family and pay the bills is honorable. I’ve met so many employees at Home Depot who are honest and good people. Definitely more honest and better than most of those running around in the NBA. That’s why I’d rather hang out with the people in the Home Depot storage room than with some of these so-called NBA stars.”

Delonte West: When even Marc Cuban can’t help anymore

For a long time, it was quiet around the former NBA professional until the next incident occurred in 2020. As ESPN reported at the time, a photo of West was circulating on the Internet in which he could be seen begging for change.

The owner of the Dallas Mavericks, Mark Cuban, also saw this video. He tried to get him back on the right track. In 2021, West was treated at a drug rehabilitation center in Florida, where he also worked for a while.

But because of his illness, West never lasted long in the centers. In the “All the Smokes” podcast, Mark Cuban spoke about this time: “We get him back, put him in the rehabilitation center in Florida, he takes his things, throws them over the fence and is gone.”

Such incidents happened again and again until Cuban gave up: “He has to want to help himself first. I tried. I know it’s hard for him, but I wish him only the best.”

Now West is back on the edge. One can only hope that one day he will be able to live a normal, drug-free life again.
