On Sunday, the national team begins preparations for the European Football Championship in their own country. However, since some professionals are still playing for their clubs, national coach Nagelsmann is taking two young players with him to Thuringia.

The U21 national players Brajan Gruda from FSV Mainz 05 and Rocco Reitz from Borussia Mönchengladbach will expand the training group of the German national football team in the first preparation phase for the European Championship. National coach Julian Nagelsmann will take the duo with A-team prospects into the training camp in Blankenhain.

The provisional German European Championship squad will meet in Thuringia on Sunday. The first preparation phase for the home tournament will take place there until the end of the month. “Some of our national players are still playing in the DFB Cup final and the Champions League final and will join the team later,” said Nagelsmann. “In order to be able to train optimally in the first period of preparation, even if one or the other is injured, we would like to give two young, promising players the opportunity to show what they can do in the A team.”

The 19-year-old Gruda in particular has recently attracted attention and contributed a lot to Mainz 05’s survival in the league. The offensive talent has a contract that runs until 2026, but is likely to be in demand after his strong performances in the second half of the season. “I’m not constantly checking my cell phone to see if anyone is calling for Gruda because we want to sell him. No, I’m overjoyed if we don’t get a call because we have a super gem,” said sporting director Heidel, commenting on the transfer rumors.

Seven players missing at the start of the training camp

The Leverkusen trio Jonathan Tah, Florian Wirtz and Robert Andrich will be playing in the DFB Cup final this Saturday against second division club 1. FC Kaiserslautern. They will therefore travel to the training camp later. Completely absent from Blankenhain will be Dortmund’s Niclas Füllkrug and Nico Schlotterbeck as well as Toni Kroos and Antonio Rüdiger from Real Madrid, who will be playing in the Champions League final in London with their clubs on June 1st.

The DFB team will move to its European Championship quarters in Herzogenaurach the day before – but without Gruda and Reitz. The German U21 team will not play any more matches after the end of the season.
