  • Daniil Medvedev regularly causes viral scenes with his freakouts.

  • In Madrid he spent 20 minutes explaining how he deals with it.

  • The Russian has long since put his frustration with the referees in Monaco behind him.

Daniil Medvedev (ATP 4) is in the quarterfinals of the ATP 1000 tournament in Madrid. There he meets the Nadal conqueror Jiri Lehecka (ATP 31) from the Czech Republic. The Russian tennis star dropped two sets in three games on the way to the last eight. “I enjoy the clay courts a little more every year,” the 28-year-old explained in the run-up to the Madrid Open.

«I win 90% of the games on hard courts when I feel good. On clay, every game is 50/50,” said Medvedev, who recently freaked out on the court several times in Monaco because of referee decisions.

Medvedev doesn’t regret his outbursts

When asked about his outbursts of anger, the Russian said he had already ticked off those 10 minutes after the game. «In Monte Carlo I didn’t feel well and was a bit sick. During the game I was completely in the tunnel,” explains Medvedev. After the controversial referee decisions, he suddenly lost focus and went “a little crazy”.

But the whole thing wasn’t out of the ordinary. Mistakes can happen to everyone. Not only in tennis, but also in football and other sports, you have to accept mistakes and look forward. “At that moment it is difficult to control your emotions. But I don’t regret what happened. Even though I wish I hadn’t reacted like that,” says the 2021 US Open winner.

“These are emotions that are part of it.”

20 Minutes wants to know from Medvedev whether it bothers him that his freakouts regularly become viral clips on the Internet. “It annoys me, but that’s just how social media and clickbait works,” says the Australian Open finalist. “There can be a few great points in a game, but they are not shown, only these moments,” continues the world number four.

«I have learned to live with it. “It’s emotions, it’s part of life,” adds Medvedev. Basically, he doesn’t see his actions as anything bad. «I didn’t harm anyone and didn’t do anything bad. So I’ll try to do better next time,” said the Russian.

Shortly after the media event in Madrid, another video circulated online showing another freak out by Medvedev. During training in Madrid, he threw his racket into the corner in anger. The trigger for the reaction remains unclear. One can be prepared for further outbursts of anger from the hothead from Moscow.
