Elena Rybakina took her Stuttgart form with her to Madrid
Sometimes luck really does help the hard-working. Which doesn’t mean that Yulia Putintseva didn’t work diligently on a surprise. And Putintseva had actually already bagged the win against Elena Rybakina with an almost perfect stop at 5:2 in the third set. But Rybakina reached the ball – and fended off her opponent’s chance with the help of the net tape.
After that, the 2022 Wimbledon winner seemed to be marching unstoppably to victory, but left three match points unused. But the fourth option worked. And Rybakina moved into the semi-finals with a score of 4:6, 7:6 (4) and 7:5. There she will meet either Aryna Sabalenka or Mirra Andreeva.
The second match of the semifinals was already fixed yesterday: After her three-set win against Beatriz Haddad Maia, Iga Swiatek will meet Madison Keys, who also had to go the full distance against Ons Jabeur.
Here is the individual tableau in Madrid
