Edon Zhegrova Nominated for Best Player of the Season at UNFP Trophies: A Missed Opportunity for FC Nantes

This Monday evening, Edon Zhegrova will be present at the big evening of the UNFP trophies because the Lille striker is nominated for the title of best player of the season against Dembélé, Mbappé, Aubameyang and Lees-Melou.

Author of 12 goals and 9 assists in all competitions, the Kosovar international shone in the colors of LOSC this season. Obviously, the Lille striker deserves his nomination for the title of best player of the season at the UNFP trophies. After growing up in the shadows and discretion in Switzerland then in Belgium, Edon Zhegrova explodes at the highest level and could reach the biggest European clubs in the years to come. His unexpected trajectory also leaves immense regrets on the side of FC Nantes. And for good reason, the Jeunes Footeux site tells us that in August 2019, the Kosovar striker was proposed to the Canaries staff. At that time, Zhegrova was on loan from Genk to FC Basel and did not have much playing time.

On the contrary, the Kosovar was seen as an irregular player, capable of brilliant shots but who was not the most reliable striker over the duration of a season. Despite Zhegrova’s obvious technical qualities, the Nantes management chose to refuse this profile. A terrible mistake since Zhegrova was subsequently transferred for only 3 million euros to Basel, where he achieved great things, to the point of attracting the attention of LOSC, who brought him for 7 million euros in January 2022.

Everyone knows what happens next, with a first season of adaptation in the North of France before the total explosion in 2023-2024. The market value of the player now exceeds 20 million euros, enough to leave great regrets to the management of FC Nantes but also to the supporters of the Canaries, who regularly complain about the weakness of their recruitment unit and who will not change notice upon reading this information.
