An official confirmation is still pending from Thiem’s side. The fact that the 30-year-old is toying with the idea of resigning is nothing new. It was only at the end of April during the BMW Open in Munich that Thiem explained in a media round in which SPORT1 also took part: “The timing depends on the ranking, but also on how I generally feel or what I think is right for me. That’s the most important thing, that my decision feels 100 percent right for me.”
He no longer wants to worry about whether he will make it into the main draw at the Grand Slam tournaments or not. “If it goes in the direction of Australia and I am back in the ranking around the rotation (outside the main field), then the decision will probably go in one direction,” the tennis star gave hints about a possible end after the season.
In 2021, Thiem injured his wrist and had to take a nine-month break. The comeback followed in March 2022, but it was slow. Since then, the 30-year-old’s form curve has been pointing downwards. Attempts to gain new impetus through a change of coach and thus return to the road to success have so far also come to nothing.

Thiem lacks faith in improvement
The right-hander can now play “relatively pain-free, depending on how long the match or training lasts.” But: “It just doesn’t feel the same as it did before the injury, that’s the main problem,” said Thiem in Munich.
The longer this is the case, the more hope dwindles that success will be achieved again. “If you look at the last year or two, even for me at some point it becomes difficult to maintain the belief that things are really going in a better direction in the long term,” he admitted.
