World star Thiem ends his career at the age of 30

Dressed entirely in white, Thiem speaks to his fans and explains: “The 2024 season will be my last.”

The bitter truth: “There are several reasons for this. My wrist hasn’t healed the way I thought it would. The second reason is my inner feeling. I played with the idea for a long time and carefully. It was an incredible journey that I am immensely grateful for. In the end I came to the decision to end my career at the end of the season. It’s the right decision and I’m very happy with it.”

The clear career highlight: The US Open victory in 2020, when the Ösi star was able to defeat Alexander Zverev (26) after being 0-2 set down.

The former number three in the ATP rankings has been suffering from a persistent wrist injury since 2021 and has never been able to regain his previous form as one of the best players in the world.

Thiem told BILD in April: “I’m extremely interested in football, I want to do something about it, and my third big passion is nature and the environment. I would also like to be more active after my career because then I will have more time for it.”

He will have the chance to do so from autumn onwards.
