Dominant Double Victory for Guggenberger Legionnaires in 1st Baseball Bundesliga

A resounding double success for the Guggenberger Legionnaires: The Regensburgers celebrated two landslide victories on the eighth matchday in the 1st Baseball Bundesliga against the Mainz Athletics. On Friday, the Upper Palatinate team beat the home team 18-0. On Saturday, the two-time champions were also left with nothing to gain in the 12-2 victory of the Schwabelweisers. With these two successes, the Regensburgers stopped their mini-misery of three defeats in a row across all competitions.

“It was important that we played our game again and showed a reaction after the three defeats in a row,” said Helmig. With 12:4 wins, the five-time Bundesliga champions also extended their lead in the southern group. Pursuer Heidenheim Heideköpfe slipped up in the Baden-Württemberg derby against the Stuttgart Reds and are already two defeats behind the Legionnaires. The Stuttgart team are also the next opponents of the leaders. On Friday (7 p.m.) and Saturday (1 p.m.), the Schwabelweiser team will play against the Bad Cannstatt team.

Offensive fireworks

The success story of the former arch-rivals was primarily written by the offense. 29 hits and 30 runs were the result after the two games on Saturday evening. The guests also provided a spectacle with five home runs. “I am pleased that all the bats finally exploded at once in the offense,” explained Legionnaires coach Helmig afterwards.

But it wasn’t just the attack that rolled at will in Rheinhessen. The pitchers also left their mark on the proceedings. Another new pitcher, Pablo Guillen Diaz, celebrated his Bundesliga debut for the Legionnaires. The Spaniard, who was born in Cuba, is a real top-class player. Last September, Guillen won the European Championship with Spain in the Czech Republic. Last season, the 25-year-old played for the top Italian club from Parma. “It’s a sensational signing for us,” said a delighted Helmig.

Lou Helmig provided the first highlight of the Legionnaires’ thoroughly successful weekend. With his double in the first inning, the coach’s son set the course for victory on Friday evening. In the second inning, Nino Sacasa went one better: with a two-run home run, the national player increased the lead to 3:0. The thirst for attack had now really been awakened. Another inning later, Antonio Torres hammered the ball over the outfield fence. New score: 6:0. Alexander Schmidt rang in the final act. With the third home run of the evening, the national team shortstop increased the lead to nine points. With just as many runs in the sixth and seventh innings, the Upper Palatinate team brought the one-sided encounter to an early end.

Quiet throwing days

Joe Cedano de Leon and Patrick Mitchell had a more or less quiet day at work on the Regensburg pitcher’s mound. Starter Cedano only allowed two hits and three walks in six innings. The national player recorded ten strikeouts. Mitchell (one hit, one walk, two strikeouts) sealed the win in the last inning. In the second meeting, however, Aljo Sujak, the Legionnaires’ starting pitcher, did not get off to such a good start. In three innings, the American allowed four walks and two hits. Mainz took advantage of this to take a 2-0 lead in the opening inning. The Athletics’ rebellion only ended when new signing Guillen was substituted on. In three innings, the Spaniard allowed neither a hit nor a walk and recorded four strikeouts. Nick Miceli was even more dominant afterwards, sending eight of nine batters back to the bench with strikeouts.

In the offensive, the Regensburg team continued where they had left off the previous evening. The guests made up for the early deficit in the second inning. The Legionnaires pulled ahead with three more runs into the fourth inning. In the sixth inning, Terrell Joyce increased the lead to 6:2 with a solo home run. Daniel Patrice put the finishing touches on the game with his three-run home run to give the final score.
