DFB Fines Darmstadt, Adding to Season of Woes

There is little reason to be happy in Darmstadt at the moment. Initially relegation was certain, on Sunday there was a 0-6 debacle against Hoffenheim in the last home game of the season and now there is also a fine from the DFB.

In the game against Stuttgart, the fans interrupted the game twice in protest, and Darmstadt now has to pay for that. IMAGO/HJS

As the DFB announced on Monday, “the sports court of the German Football Association (DFB) sentenced the Darmstadt team with a fine of 25,000 euros in a single-judge trial after the DFB control committee brought charges for two cases of unsportsmanlike behavior by its supporters.” The Lilies are allowed to use up to 8,300 euros for security or violence prevention measures and would have to prove this to the DFB by December 30, 2024.

In the 1:2 draw against VfB Stuttgart, Darmstadt supporters threw various objects – especially tennis balls – onto the pitch in the 17th minute as part of the protest against a possible DFL investor, causing a four-minute break in the game. Six minutes later, tennis balls and also bouncy balls flew again with the participation of both fan camps. This in turn resulted in a 14-minute break in the game. A fine of 20,000 euros was imposed for this.

In addition, a Darmstadt spectator poured liquid over the head and down the neck of fourth official Arne Aarnik after the final whistle. Because the perpetrator was identified by the club and subsequently given a nationwide stadium ban, the sentence was significantly reduced. The fine was set at 5,000 euros; without successful identification of the perpetrators, it would have been at least 20,000 euros.

The designated Bundesliga relegated team has agreed to the verdict, so it is legally binding.
