Countdown to the Judo World Championships in Abu Dhabi: Top Competitors and Team Austria’s Lineup

There are still four days until the Judo World Championships in Abu Dhabi (UAE, May 19th – 24th). 683 judoka from 110 nations are expected – including no fewer than eight world number one and seven defending champions (Christa Deguchi/CAN/-57, Clarisse Agbegnenou FRA/-63, Francisco Garrigos ESP/-60, Nils Stump SUI/-73, Tato Grigalashvili GEO/-81, Arman Adamian AIN/-100, Teddy Riner FRA/+100).

Austria has nominated 12 active participants (Katharina Tanzer/SU Noricum Leibnitz/ST/-48, Laura Kallinger/Judoring/W/-57, Lubjana Piovesana/LZ Hohenems/V, Magdalena Krssakova/JC Sirvan/W/both -63, Michaela Polleres /JC Sparkasse Wimpassing/NÖ/-70, Maria Höllwart/ESV Sanjindo Bischofshofen/S/+78; Samuel Gaßner/UJZ Mühlviertel/OÖ/-73, Wachid Borchashvili/LZ Multikraft Wels/OÖ, Bernd Fasching/Allianz Kukla Galaxy Judo Tigers /W/-81, Laurin Böhler/LZ Hohenems/V, Aaron Fara/JC Sparkasse Wimpassing/NÖ/both -100, Movli Borchashvilli/Allianz Kukla Galaxy Judo Tigers/W/+100).

Olympic silver medalist Michaela Polleres, most recently a two-time Grand Slam winner in Dushanbe/TJK and Antalya/TUR, is seeded number two. Shamil Borchashvili (-81/LZ Multikraft Wels/Upper Austria) is skipping the World Cup. “After the European Championships, I don’t feel fit enough to fight at the top. Rest and training definitely makes more sense to me right now.”
