Countdown to Euro 2024: Inside Look at the German National Team’s Preparations

Today at 1 p.m., national coach Julian Nagelsmann (36) will appear before the press and officially start the countdown to our home European Championship. Only 18 days to go – then host Germany will open the 2024 European Championship with the match against Scotland in Munich (9 p.m., ARD, MagentaTV and here in the BILD ticker). Since Sunday, the DFB team has been staying at the “Spa & GolfResort Weimarer Land” in Blankenhain, half an hour’s drive south of Weimar. In addition to training, the focus in the first few days is also on growing together as a team. Some of the players’ families and girlfriends are there.

BILD observed the arrival at the DFB hotel on Sunday: Lena Wurzenberger (partner of Julian Nagelsmann), Lea Prinz (Maxi Mittelstädt), Sabrina Völler, Lina Kimmich and their children, Sina Groß and family, and the partners of Alexander Nübel and Chris Führich. They will stay with the team until Wednesday, and there will be a joint celebration with players, families and staff on one evening. Anika Neuer was also expected with her newborn baby. But goalkeeper Manuel Neuer (38) is absent due to an infection. He is not expected until Tuesday at the earliest.

The DFB team’s first public training session will take place today at 4:30 p.m. on the Ernst-Abbe sports field in Carl-Zeiss Jena. 15,000 fans are expected. The tickets are said to have sold out within an hour. The training will be streamed live on the DFB channels on YouTube and Twitch.

To allow the stars to slowly get used to the game and recover from injuries, training only takes place once a day from Tuesday to Friday.

DFB: Federal President Steinmeier visits

To provide extra motivation, a high-ranking visitor has announced his arrival on Wednesday. Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier (68) will visit the national team in the hotel 16 days before the opening match and get the team in the mood for the tournament in their own country.

Also expected on Wednesday: the arrival of Leverkusen’s double winners Florian Wirtz (21), Jonathan Tah (28) and Robert Andrich (29). The players celebrated the trophy and cup on Sunday. During the week, Ilkay Gündogan (33) and Marc-André ter Stegen (32) will also join the team, who played the last LaLiga game with Barcelona against Sevilla on Sunday evening.

14 days before the start of the European Championship, on Friday, the national team will travel to Herzogenaurach and set up their European Championship headquarters on the premises of supplier Adidas. There they will work on the final touches to their footballing skills.

On Monday, June 3, Nagelsmann’s eleven will play against Ukraine in Nuremberg (8:45 p.m., ARD and here in the live ticker). Not yet here: Our Champions League finalists: Toni Kroos (34) and Toni Rüdiger (31) from Real Madrid, Niclas Füllkrug (31) and Nico Schlotterbeck (24) from BVB. They will face each other on Saturday (9 p.m., ZDF, DAZN and here in the BILD live ticker) in Wembley Stadium, will miss the Thuringia training camp completely, and will join the team after the Ukraine game.

EM 2024: Julian Nagelsmann has to cut another player

The last European Championship test will take place on Friday, June 7, in Gladbach against Greece (8.45 p.m., RTL). Afterwards, the DFB stars will have another day off and can take a breather. Julian Nagelsmann has to report the final European Championship squad to UEFA by midnight. One player will be cut from the 27 players. Candidates who are uncertain: central defender Robin Koch (27) and winger Maxi Beier (21). Late nominations are still possible if a player is injured. But only up to 24 hours before kick-off of the first group match!

On Sunday 9 June the team will meet again in Herzogenaurach. Only five days until the start of the European Championship. On 13 June, one day before the opening match, the DFB team will travel to Munich. There will be a final press conference there, and the final training session will take place in Herzogenaurach. The ball will then roll on Friday at 9 p.m.
