Could Klay Thompson Be the Missing Piece for the Sixers This Offseason?

If the Sixers once again fell prematurely in the Playoffs, they will have great flexibility this summer to recruit heavyweights. Philadelphia hopes to attract a third star alongside Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey, but could also turn to Klay Thompson.

Paul George, Jimmy Butler, Brandon Ingram, Donovan Mitchell, DeMar DeRozan, OG Anunoby…

Whether on the Free Agency market or through a transfer, the Sixers can position themselves to catch a big fish this summer. And the names previously mentioned are all in manager Daryl Morey’s little papers. But we know, in the NBA, it is better to prepare a plan B or even a plan C in the event that plan A falls through.

And this plan B could be called Klay Thompson.

The Philadelphia 76ers might consider offering Klay Thompson a 1+1 year deal similar to the one Bruce Brown received, per @JakeLFischer

According to Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sportsthe Sixers could in fact offer a two-year contract, with the second year as a team option, to the Warriors sniper (who will be a free agent, unless previously extended with Golden State).

This is the same type of contract that the Pacers offered to Bruce Brown last summer. As a reminder, Indiana had put 45 million on the table over two seasons to recruit BB, an amount considered high but the Pacers kept their flexibility thanks to this famous option in year 2. The integration of Brown having been a little complicated , Indy ended up using the player’s salary to trade him to the Raptors and get Pascal Siakam last January. A similar deal would allow Daryl Morey to keep his options open for a future move for a star, while acquiring one of the best shooters in the League and a four-time NBA champion.

Certainly, Klay Thompson – 34 years old – has shown serious signs of decline at the Warriors (especially defensively) and is not the All-Star caliber player Philly is looking for today. He is also probably not the guy who will allow the Sixers to take the expected step in the Playoffs. But he remains an undeniable threat from the parking lot, which could free up even more space for Tyrese Maxey and Joel Embiid.
