Coach Roberto De Zerbi is leaving English club Brighton & Hove Albion. The club confirmed this on its website. The Italian will be in charge of the team for the last time on the last matchday of the Premier League against Manchester United.

The Italian is also under discussion at FC Bayern. The day before, De Zerbi had confirmed that he did not want to leave his club. “If you ask me if there is any club that can change my mind: No, there isn’t one. I would like to stay in Brighton to achieve the highest possible goal every season,” the 44-year-old was told by The magazine Athletic” quoted.

Now, according to the club, he says: “I’m very sad to be leaving Brighton. But I’m also very proud of what we’ve achieved.” De Zerbi had looked after the team since September 2022 and led them to the Europa League last year, where Brighton failed in the round of 16 against AS Roma. Recently, however, there was criticism that his contract was actually valid until 2026.

Eberl is distant

In view of several possible interested parties in Europe, it was reported that a low double-digit million sum would be needed to sign De Zerbi. This could now be no longer applicable.

However, Bayern’s sports director Max Eberl expressed his distance to De Zerbi’s contract termination in a statement to Sportschau. “It doesn’t mean anything to us.” When asked how he perceived De Zerbi’s work, Eberl said: “I’m too far away to judge Roberto De Zerbi.”

ZDF also asked Eberl whether he could vehemently object to the new coach being Italian. His answer was: “Yes.”
