Coach Christian Streich talks about his departure from SC Freiburg

In two weeks, Christian Streich will be on the sidelines for the last time as coach of Bundesliga club SC Freiburg. The approaching farewell triggers new feelings despite his long term in office.

“It feels unusual because I’ve never experienced anything like this before,” he said in an interview on Sky. “But it’s not a career end.”

Streich, who has been head coach in Freiburg since the beginning of 2012, would have liked to announce his departure at a different time: “Actually, the focus should only be on the games and our sporting success. I’m somewhat successful in concentrating on that.”

When asked about the footsteps he will leave behind, the 58-year-old reacts modestly as usual: “They won’t be that big.” His successor Julian Schuster brings with him a “very independent personality” and “a lot of specialist knowledge”. “I am convinced that the fans will form a symbiosis with Julian and the team.”

The football teacher commented that Uli Hoeneß was said to have thought about bringing Streich to FC Bayern years ago: “I don’t know whether it would have even been an option for me.” Although he would have been flattered by such an offer. “I never really thought about changing clubs,” he said.

Streich has been active as a coach at SC Freiburg since 1995. He worked in the youth sector for a long time, but took over the professional team a good twelve years ago and led the team to the Europa League twice and to the final of the DFB Cup in 2022. Streich announced his departure in mid-March of this year.
