The Cleveland Cavaliers are parting ways with head coach JB Bickerstaff. The NBA team achieved its greatest success in six years.

Another coaching change in the NBA! As ESPN and The Athletic, among others, have reported, the Cleveland Cavaliers have parted ways with their head coach JB Bickerstaff after five years of working together.

The Ohio franchise finished the regular season with a positive record of 48-34 and finished fourth in the Eastern Conference. The Cavs survived the first round of the playoffs in seven games against the Orlando Magic around Franz and Moritz Wagner. In round two, the Cavaliers, who were weakened by replacements, lost 4-1 to the NBA’s top favorites, the Boston Celtics.

Biggest success in six years
Bickerstaff joined the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2019. After a year as an assistant coach, the 45-year-old was promoted to head coach of the franchise in 2020 and successfully drove a major change.
Cleveland made it into the Eastern Conference Semifinals for the first time in six years this season, but Bickerstaff’s journey in Ohio ended prematurely. As NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski reports, the franchise around general manager Mike Gansey wants to pursue a new approach in order to be able to make an even deeper playoff run in the next few years.

“JB is a respected NBA coach and an incredible human being,” said Cavs President Koby Altman. “Decisions like this are never easy, especially when you look back at how the franchise’s rebuilding began under his leadership.” However, the NBA is a business that sometimes requires “aggressive risk-taking” “to move a franchise forward.”
