Champions League: PSG’s great disappointment, ‘the flame has gone out’ – Football

The celebration of the Borussia Dortmund players in front of their fans, at the famous “yellow wall” in their own sector of the “Boulogne” curve of the Parc des Princes marks yet another farewell of PSG to the Champions League. And among many similar defeats in recent years, this is the one that hurts the most: hopes had grown thanks to the new style imposed by Luis Enrique, to a game less dependent on stars – after the departure of Messi and Neymar – and to the certainty that Kylian Mbappé would certainly have given the Parisians the dream that had never been realized before the farewell announced for June.

There was nothing to be done: considered favourites, the Qatari-owned Parisians lost “without winning and without scoring a goal” in the double match in the semi-final against Borussia Dortmund. For all the media, the comparison with the Olympic flame that lights up today in Marseille and that of PSG that went out last night at the Parc des Princes, is a must: “Without flame” is the headline on the front page of L ‘Equipe, with a destroyed Mbappé in the face of the Germans’ celebration, while Le Parisien, divides the front page in two: “The great sin” and “The Olympic fever”.

Everyone agreed on the disappointing evening of the most anticipated, Mbappé and Dembelé. In its editorial, L’Equipe also comments bitterly on the record number of posts and crossbars – seven – hit by the Parisians between the first and second legs: “only the losers don’t have luck – writes the editorialist Vincent Duluc – only those who don’t provoke it enough, they then see her galloping away.” And again: “History will remember that the posts were round, but that some feet were square. PSG was not lucky, playing only one half, forgetting to mark Mats Hummels on the goal, reciting for a long time a monotonous school score given to the precepts of his coach and never being dangerous except in a disorderly way.”
