Canadian Badminton Stars Set to Shine at Tokyo Olympics: Li, Yang, Dong, and Yakura Ready to Compete

Li will take part in the women’s individual event and Yang will do the same in the men’s event, while Dong and Yakura will join forces in the doubles.

A triple gold medalist at the Pan American Games, first in Guadalajara in 2011, then in Toronto in 2015 and in Lima in 2019, Li will be making her fourth appearance at the Olympic Games.

After suffering a knee injury that kept her out of competition in the second half of last season, preventing her from competing at the Pan American Games in Santiago, she returned to action this year, finishing 3rd at the German Open.

Li reached the round of 16 at the Tokyo Games, matching Canada’s best Olympic result in the solo event.

It’s always a great feeling and an unforgettable experience to qualify for the Olympics. The qualification process itself represents a significant challenge, it is very grueling to overcome a series of unexpected challenges as we do in a year like this, Li said in a statement.

In my case, I had to deal with an injury and recover from surgery, I experienced a change of coaches, new training methods, as well as financial difficulties, not to mention the other challenges. I’m really happy to have made it through and qualified for my fourth Olympic Games.

A quote from badminton player Michelle Li

Yang will participate in his second Olympics. The gold medalist at the last Pan American Games, in 2023, experienced his first Olympics in Tokyo, where he was the youngest member of the Canadian badminton team.

Badminton has been part of the Olympic program since the Barcelona Games in 1992. The best ranking recorded by Canada is a 4th place obtained by Li and Bruce in women’s doubles at the London Games in 2012.

The various badminton tournaments will be played from July 27 to August 5 at the Porte de La Chapelle arena.
