Bo Svensson becomes coach of Union Berlin. This is reported by the pay TV channel Sky. It is said that the Dane will be presented this week. The final discussions with the new sports director Horst Heldt took place on Wednesday. The “Sportbuzzer” already wrote on Wednesday that the ex-Mainz coach would be the new man on the Köpenick sidelines (you can read more about the report here).
Svensson is no stranger to the Bundesliga. The 44-year-old coached FSV Mainz 05 until November 2023, for whom he had also played for a long time as an active professional in the German top flight. He had worked successfully for the Rhineland-Palatinate team since 2021. At the beginning of this season, however, things were no longer going well, so Svensson resigned.
Svensson was already a candidate at Union
Sky reports that Svensson was the desired solution at Union Berlin. The capital club announced the amicable separation from successful coach Urs Fischer in November. Even back then, Svensson was considered a possible candidate for the coaching job at the Alte Försterei.
However, Nenad Bjelica was given the contract. The club parted ways with the Croatian shortly before the end of the season when relegation suddenly seemed imminent. Marco Grote took over as interim coach with assistant coaches Marie-Louise Eta and Sebastian Bönig. The trio saved the club on the last matchday with a 2-1 win against Freiburg.
The “Sportbuzzer” had already reported on Wednesday that Svensson would take over at Union. Long-time Union manager Oliver Ruhnert, who is returning to be chief scout at his own request, had spoken extremely positively about Svensson at the weekend. “Why shouldn’t Bo Svensson be a good fit for Union? He has worked really successfully in Mainz and is an experienced and committed Bundesliga coach. I think it could be a good fit,” said Ruhnert on the TV channel Welt TV.
