Blue Skies in Abu Dhabi: A Recap of Italy’s Success at the World Championships

The curtain has fallen on the AD World Championships Abu Dhabi. And it was a great world championship for the blues who achieved an incredible female leadership, an excellent fifth place in the overall medal table and found the team podium again. For the first time with the mixed formula and twenty-two years after the double bronze in 2002, when Italy climbed both the men’s and women’s podiums still with seven weight categories.

It is worth remembering the names of the protagonists of that feat to honor them on this special occasion and to also understand the real extent of the time spent by the medalist in Abu Dhabi: Giovanni Carella (60), Alessandro Bruyere, Giovanni Casale (66), Giuseppe Maddaloni (73), Andrea Truzzi, Roberto Meloni (81), Francesco Lepre (90), Michele Monti (100), Denis Braidotti, Paolo Bianchessi (+100); Giuseppina Macrì (48), Antonia Cuomo, Laura Maddaloni (52), Cinzia Cavazzuti (57), Maddalena Sorrentino (63), Ylenia Scapin (70), Lucia Morico (78), Barbara Andolina (+78).

Below is a summary of the recently concluded World Championships created by the Team Manager Alessandro Comi: “The conclusions will be drawn after Paris but it is not wrong to say that a world championship like this has not been seen for many years. On the one hand there were the medals with Odette conquering the world, the women’s team dominating the medal table for nations and the bronze in the mixed-team making history, on the other the solidity of the team savored in the everyday life of what happens behind the spotlight. It is a group that has grown in a new dimension in the history of our Federation, that of decentralization which, unlike what might have been feared, not only has not debased the sense of belonging but above all has made it possible to guarantee tailor-made attention, those who then made the difference, millimetric but decisive, in the most important moments. I have known the Abu Dhabi athletes since they were cadets and, despite everyone’s stories, it is nice to find them here with adult awareness, the ability to expend themselves even to the limit and clarity, when needed, to question themselves with a healthy critical sense, without too many excuses: the bitterness of a missed world title, of a medal only cherished or of an Olympic qualification missed was part of the even tragic daily life of this expedition, as much as, in these days, the great results did… the ability to self-determine, together to the never banal support between teammates were the lowest common denominator of a winning team, regardless of the performances of the individuals. We will remember this world championship for a long time because it is a small piece of the history of our national judo but also, among those who experienced it from the inside, for the concentration of explosive, sometimes conflicting emotions that saw us dry some tears but also celebrate for and with a group of sensational girls and boys. They are the blue ticket to Paris.”
