Australian Badminton Teams Set to Compete in Thomas and Uber Cup 2024 in China

The Australian badminton teams will get their campaign underway at the Thomas and Uber Cup 2024 in Chengdu, People’s Republic of China this weekend.

The seven-member Australian men’s badminton team will be led by world No. 159 Ricky Tang. The last time the Australian men’s team played in the Thomas Cup was in 2018. It will be their fifth appearance in the tournament.

Australia have been drawn in Group A where they will face hosts China, the 10-time champions, on Saturday. Two-time runners-up, the Republic of Korea, and Canada complete Group A.

The top two teams from each of the four groups (A–D) qualify for the quarter-finals. Australia appeared in the Thomas Cup for the first time in 1955 and have never progressed beyond the quarter-finals.

The Australian women’s team, led by world No. 93 Tiffany Ho, will compete in Group B alongside 2018 runners-up Thailand, Chinese Taipei and Malaysia. This will be their 10th appearance in the Uber Cup.

However, just like the men’s team, the women’s shuttlers haven’t been able to progress beyond the group stage.

Australia qualified for the 2022 Uber Cup but they were eliminated in the group stages. They will begin their Uber Cup 2024 campaign against Thailand on Sunday.
