Ange Postecoglou’s Press Conference Previewing Spurs’ Showdown with Manchester City

Ange Postecoglou is holding his press conference on Monday afternoon ahead of Tottenham’s final home match of the season as they welcome Manchester City in the Premier League.

There is plenty riding on the clash between the two teams as it presents the strange scenario that if Spurs can get a positive result against Pep Guardiola’s side then it would hand the initiative in the title race to their fierce local rivals Arsenal. However, there is also the scenario that if Liverpool win or draw at Aston Villa on Monday night then Tottenham retain a chance of grabbing fourth spot and a Champions League spot on the final day of the season if they were to overcome City.

Despite all of their recent success, Guardiola’s men do have a poor record at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and have lost every Premier League game at the ground and have not even scored a goal in those matches. January’s 1-0 win in the FA Cup was City’s first goal and win in any competition at the stadium, which opened half a decade ago.

Postecoglou will be asked about that feeling among many fans that for once they would not be distraught if Spurs lost this game, in order to prevent Arsenal from winning the Premier League.

He will also provide an update on Richarlison’s calf injury following his scan as well as giving fresh news on any issues picked up in the win against Burnley on Saturday.

Our Tottenham correspondent Alasdair Gold is among those putting the questions to Postecoglou. Scroll down for his latest updates from the press conference at Hotspur Way.

More from Postecoglou

I was part of one of the biggest ones in the world in the last couple of years with Celtic and Rangers and I understand the rivalry but I’ve never and will never understand if someone wants their own team to lose. That’s not what sport is about. It’s not what I love about the game. What I love more than anything in the game is the competitiveness, challenging yourself to beat someone and coming out successful. Anything outside of that it’s got nothing to do with sport. It’s got nothing to do with me. If other people want to treat it that way, that they get pleasure from other people’s misery, that’s not how I’ve lived my life and how I perceive my role. My role is to bring success to this football club and whatever proportion, whether it’s his two mates or 99% of people you know, I know 100% of Spurs supporters want us to win, be successful and win trophies. That is without a shadow of a doubt and us winning tomorrow night will help us bring joy to 100% of Spurs supporters.

Postecoglou on Tottenham fans wanting their own team to lose

If you’re going by social media then 99% of them will [want Spurs to lose] but please don’t tell me that’s your world. If it is you need counselling. I understand rivalry but I’ll never understand anyone wanting their own team to lose.

People are allowed to feel way they do but I’ve been consistent and strong in my belief that it’s important for this club to get to where we want to, not look for a silver bullet, it’s hard work, perseverance, quality not false dawns and know what real success looks like. Anything in between, bragging rights, are meaningless to me. We’ve got a game tomorrow we want to win.

You think the majority of our fans don’t want us to win? I don’t see it that way, I think the fans inside the stadium will create the same atmosphere they always do.”

Postecoglou on Richarlison and Spurs’ team news

Not good, he’ll miss the next two games. Nothing serious. Bissouma unfortunately picked up a knee injury so he’ll miss the last two games. Other than that everyone who was available is available.
