17th stage of the Giro d’Italia: Steinhauser triumphs in the Dolomites ahead of Tadej Pogacar

As of: May 22, 2024 5:14 p.m

Georg Steinhauser won the 17th stage of the Giro d’Italia on the Passo Brocon and celebrated the first German stage victory in this year’s Tour of Italy. Steinhauser stopped the winning streak of Tadej Pogacar, who, however, extended his lead in the overall standings.

The 22-year-old from the EF Education-EasyPost team won on Wednesday (May 22, 2024) after 159 kilometers and more than 4,000 meters of altitude after an impressive solo ride in the Dolomites, thus stopping the winning streak of superstar Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates).

Steinhauser secured the first German stage success at this year’s Giro d’Italia, and it was also the first professional victory for the son of former professional cyclist Tobias Steinhauser. Nico Denz ensured the last German stage victory in the Tour of Italy last year.

Pogacar extends his lead at the Giro d’Italia

Pogacar, who has already achieved five daily victories, attacked late and took second place, a good one and a half minutes behind, further extending his lead in the overall standings. The Italian Antonio Tiberi (Bahrain Victorious) took third place in the small chasing group.

34 kilometers from the finish, Steinhauser broke away from fellow breakaway rider Amanuel Ghebreigzabhier from Eritrea and was not caught on the 11.9-kilometer-long final climb with an average gradient of 6.4 percent. Only on Sunday, Steinhauser, who has been riding for the American racing team EF Education since his professional debut in 2022, impressed with third place at the mountain finish in Livigno.

His father Tobias, whose greatest success was a stage win at the Tour de Suisse, once rode in a team with Jan Ullrich. Ullrich was also married to Georg Steinhauser’s aunt Sara for more than ten years.

18th stage to Padua

The fight for overall victory is still a clear matter for Pogacar. The Slovenian is almost eight minutes ahead of the Colombian Daniel Felipe Martinez from the German Bora-hansgrohe team. This is unlikely to change on Thursday, when a sprint finish is expected on the 18th stage over 178 kilometers from Fiera di Primiero to Padua.
