Young Lithuanian Mykolas Alekna Breaks 38-Year-Old Discus Throw World Record

Only 21 years old and already a world record holder. Lithuanian discus thrower Mykolas Alekna has written a piece of history in his sport at an athletics meeting in Oklahoma (USA). He threw the discus 74.35 meters and thus improved the world record of the German Jürgen Schult, which had been on the tables for 38 years.

The discus throwing world record is no longer 74.08 meters.

After almost four decades, there is a new ruler in the discipline. Yesterday, Mykolas Alekna threw his discus 27 centimeters further than his German predecessor.

Mykolas is the son of two-time world and Olympic discus throw champion Virgilijus Alekna. Despite his young age, the Lithuanian has already become European champion (in 2022 in Munich) and has already been on the World Cup podium twice (silver in 2022 in Eugene, bronze in 2023 in Budapest).

He also smashed his personal record this weekend during the Oklahoma Throws Series World Invitational, a small meeting that was not televised. This stood at 71.00 meters since April 2023.

Jürgen Schult, who played for East Germany, set his record throw on June 6, 1986 in Neubrandenburg. It was the oldest world record among men that still stood.

The oldest world record in athletics (for men and women) that still stands is Jarmila Kratochvilova’s 1’53″28 in the 800 meters. The athlete from the then Czechoslovakia ran that cannon time in July 1983.
