Xàtiva Badminton Club Shines at Regional Championship with Nine Medals

The Xàtiva Badminton Club has returned from the Under-19 and Senior Regional Championship, held last Sunday at the Fuensanta municipal pavilion in València, with nine medals. The Setabe club came with six athletes, after the absences of Santiago Villanueva and Juan Carlos Hintze due to injury and illness, who have been suspended three golds, two silvers and four bronzes.

Andrea Orquín competed in the Under-19 categorywho played the women’s doubles alongside Soraya Gandia, from CB Enguera, and won the silver medal, after losing in the final against Julia Albertos and Ángela Viray, from CB San Fernando de València, by 21-12, 16-21 and 21-12. In the semifinals, Andrea and Soraya beat Vega Calatayud and Ivayla Valentinova from Enguerinas by 20-22, 21-13 and 21-18. Andrea Orquín also played the women’s singles, falling in the round of 16 against Sara Llopis by 21-13 and 21-12.

In the Senior category eight medals came for the Setabeans. In the SV++ category, Carlos Martínez achieved two golds, in men’s singles and doubles. In singles he won all the matches and in doubles they beat Luciano Martínez and Jesús Prieto in the final by 21-15 and 21-11. In C2, José Luis Llopis fell in the semifinals against Ángel Moreno by a double 21-15, thus winning the bronze medal. In men’s doubles, which he played alongside Antonio Jover, from CB San Fernando de València, he added another bronze.

Mª José Mompó competed in the B1-B2 category and won gold in the women’s doubles event, together with Mónica Manrique, from CB San Fernando. They were proclaimed champions after beating María Dolores López and María Poveda, from CB El Campello, in the final, by 21-9 and 21-19. In the mixed doubles, Mompó and Julio Martín won the silver medal, after losing in the final against Iván Gallardo and Mª Jesús Almagro, by 21-13 and 21-15. Julio added another metal, in this case bronze, in the men’s doubles that he played with Juan Antonio López. They lost in the semifinals by 21-17 and 25-23. Daniel Meseguer, who was paired with Pablo Lafuente, from CB Alboraia, also competed in this modality, but they could not overcome the group stage. Daniel made up for this by winning the bronze medal in the individual category B1-B2, after losing in the semifinals against David Ramal.

Bronze in the Senior Master

CB Xàtiva also added another medal last weekend, in the Senior Master of Medina del Campo (Valladolid), where Vicente Ferrer competed. The athlete from the Setabe club won bronze in the men’s doubles, who played alongside Alberto Pascual, after losing in the semifinal against José Manuel Bartolomé and Isaac Martín by 21-17, 16-21 and 21-19. In individual, Vicente Ferrer achieved fifth place, losing in the quarterfinals against Abel Hernández, 21-12 and 21-6.

Badminton Xàtiva also competed last weekend in the third provincial day of the School Games in the Benjamin category, which was held in Enguera and in which Aarón Fasanar participated. The athlete from the Setabe club achieved a victory in singles and two victories in men’s doubles, together with Adolfo Costa (AMPA Ayora). In the coming days, the athletes classified for the Provincial Jocs Escolares Championship will be announced, which will be held on May 11 in Xàtiva.

Upcoming competitions

Next Sunday, April 21, Xàtiva will be the epicenter of badminton in the Valencian Community by hosting the Under-11, Under-15 and Absolute Autonomous Championship in the Francisco Ballester pavilion., which will bring together 97 athletes from 12 regional clubs. CB Xàtiva will participate with athletes in the sub-15 and absolute categories. The competition will begin at 9 am.

The Setabe club will also be present in the fourth and final provincial day of the Jocs Escolars in the junior category, which will be held next Saturday in Valencia. The event will decide the six places in each of the tests that give access to compete in the Provincial Championship, which will take place on May 11 in Xàtiva.

Spanish Para Badminton International

Vitoria hosts these days, until April 21, a new edition of the Spanish Para Badminton International 2024, which brings together 280 athletes of 42 nationalities, including Thomas Wandschneider, a player of German origin who plays for CB Xàtiva, and who participates in the event along with the German para-badminton team. Thomas starts as the number two seed in the singles event and the third seed in the men’s doubles, who will play with Rick Cornell.

Valencia University Rector’s Trophy

This Thursday, April 18, the sports facilities of the University of Valencia in the Valencian capital will host the Rectora Trophy, in which the Badminton Xàtiva athlete David Polop will participate.
