what happened and the controversies with Lazio in the Italian Cup – Corriere.it

by Salvatore Riggio

Referee Massa had first awarded a penalty for a foul by Vecino on Cambiaso, but after checking the VAR he removed it due to an offside by Cambiaso himself

In four minutes everything happened in the first leg semi-final of the Italian Cup between Juventus and Lazio. In the 9th minute referee Massa whistled a penalty for Massimiliano Allegri’s team. It happens when Vecino charges the football to return a ball into the area, but Cambiaso arrives early and is hit by the Lazio player.

The match director has no doubts, but while the Biancocelesti protest, Imperia’s whistle is called to the VAR. The monitor needs to analyze a previous offside which could annul the decision just made. And what happens. Massa finds Cambiaso’s irregular position at the moment of Patric’s touch. The Lazio defender is the last to touch the ball before contact between Vecino and the Bianconeri and for the Juventus players his play heals Cambiaso’s position because it cannot be considered a fortuitous rejection. Massa, however, after checking the video, opts for the about-face: punishment for Lazio and no penalty for Juventus.

This time Allegri protests on the bench, but the choice has now been made and we continue. Igor Tudor, who celebrated Marusic’s goal at the Olimpico in the 93rd minute (1-0, March 30) in the championship, can breathe a sigh of relief. But he has to do without Zaccagni, replaced by Isaksen, who was hurt in a tackle just before the Vecino-Cambiaso contact.
