Wembanyama is fined $25,000 for throwing a ball into the stands

NEW YORK (AP) — Victor Wembanyama’s celebration as he threw the ball into the stands proved costly.

The NBA fined the French rookie from San Antonio $25,000 on Sunday for such an action that occurred on Friday at the end of the 130-126 overtime victory against the New York Knicks.

Wembanyama stole the ball from a long pass on the last play of the game. He caught the ball, saluted by high-fiving his hand with that of a fan standing near the court, and then threw the ball a few rows back into the crowd.

He finished the game with 40 points, 20 rebounds, and seven assists. He was the first stat line in this class recorded by a rookie since 1974, and just the fifth game with that many points, rebounds, and assists in at least 46 years.

Wembanyama, the top pick in last year’s draft, is the heavy favorite to win the Rookie of the Year award. This season he is averaging 21 points and 10.5 rebounds.
