The Open is named after Mr. Wang Wenjiao, a badminton master and the founder of Chinese badminton. It aims to carry forward Wang Wenjiao’s spirit and promote the popularization and development of badminton in Fujian Province.

Wang Wenjiao, a native of Nan’an, Fujian Province, became a well-known badminton star in Indonesia before he was 20 years old. At the most glorious moment in his life, he dropped everything and returned to China. From the prime of his life to the age of gray hair, from an athlete to a coach, he has won 56 badminton world championships and 9 team world championship trophies. He led the Chinese badminton team to create a glorious era that shocked the world of badminton. In 2015, Wang Wenjiao was awarded the “Lifetime Achievement Award” by the International Badminton Federation. In 2019, he was awarded the national honorary title of “People’s Model”. He is the only person selected in Fujian and the only person selected in the Chinese sports circle.

Under the leadership of Mr. Wang Wenjiao, Fujian badminton has been rapidly promoted and popularized. It has a broad mass base and is deeply loved by the Fujian people. His pioneering spirit has also influenced generations of badminton athletes to pass on the legacy and climb to the top. Up to now, Fujian Province has trained and sent 34 Olympic champions and world champions to the national team, making it a veritable “cradle of champions.”

The first “Wang Wenjiao Cup” Badminton Open is hosted by the Provincial Sports Bureau and will be held in four stages. It is expected that more than 100,000 people will participate. The first stage is the county (city, district) trials held from March to April. Each county (city, district) organizes its own competition and selects outstanding athletes to form local teams. The second stage is the district-city sub-station competition in May. There will be a total of 10 sub-station competitions in each district, city and Pingtan Comprehensive Experimental Zone. The top two teams in each sub-station competition will advance to the regional semi-finals. The third stage is the regional semi-finals from June to July. The province is divided into two districts for the semi-finals: the south district is Xiamen, Zhangzhou, Quanzhou, Putian and Longyan, and the north district is Fuzhou, Sanming, Nanping, Ningde, In Pingtan, the top two teams from the North and South districts will be selected to participate in the provincial finals. The fourth stage is the provincial finals in August. The county (city, district) with the first place in the finals will be awarded the title of “2024 Fujian Province ‘Wang Culture and Education Cup’ Badminton Champion County”.

During the finals, the “National Fitness · Feathers Together” All-Star Glory Night event will be held. Badminton Olympic champions and world champions will be invited to carry out various activities such as championship exhibition matches and interactions between badminton stars and the masses.

It is worth mentioning that the “Wang Wenjiao Cup” Badminton Open fully embodies the spirit of mass sports. Active and retired professional athletes are not allowed to participate. Participating athletes must have their household registration in the county (city, district) they represent, and can only represent one team. team participates in the competition. Each team will form a county-based team to participate in the competition. The competition follows the latest “Badminton Competition Rules” approved by the Chinese Badminton Association. The competition format is a five-game mixed team competition: the first game is men’s doubles (16-20 years old); the second game is men’s doubles. Doubles (21-40 years old); 3rd men’s doubles (41-60 years old); 4th mixed doubles (leadership group 18-60 years old); 5th women’s doubles (18-60 years old). Each game is best of three, and each game adopts a 21-point scoring system.
