Can Club Brugge soon start building a new stadium? The question has been around for years, but Minister Zuhal Demir hopes to (finally) be able to answer it during the month of May. “The advice is conditionally favorable.”
Club Brugge’s stadium plans have already consumed many newspaper pages. The objections of some local residents around Jan Breydel are currently hampering plans for a 40,000-seat stadium next to the current, dilapidated stadium.
For a long time, that file seemed to be on the right track, but at the beginning of last year the Council for Permit Disputes rejected that plan again. Club had already anticipated this by submitting an amended file, with a new permit application and taking the objections into account. And there it is still waiting for an answer.
Zuhal Demir, Flemish Minister for the Environment, wants to make the decision before the upcoming elections. “This file has been going on for a long time,” she said this afternoon in the Flemish Parliament. “I granted a permit in 2021, but unfortunately it was annulled.”
Club has already submitted a new application, which is currently being processed. “The advice from the Regional Environmental Permit Committee (GOVC) is conditionally favorable,” Demir adds. “We are now studying those recommendations in depth. Ideally, we will decide as quickly as possible. Such a permit can also be enforced immediately after the decision, which is also good news. It is then up to the club to consider when to start the works. I’m trying to make as much as possible and hope to decide one of the next few weeks. It will definitely be for the month of May.”
