Viennese Judo Clubs Gear Up for Exciting New Bundesliga Season

The new season in the 1st Judo Bundesliga begins on Saturday, in which three Viennese clubs will fight for points. Series champions M&R Galaxy Tigers want to equal UJZ Mühlviertel’s record with their 11th title. With a boy band, as a club coach Thomas Haasmann assures: “In my sixth generation, since I’ve been doing this, I’ve only been relying on youth!” Bernd Fasching, the “Mister Bundesliga 2023”, is challenged again this year and should make Haasmann’s dream come true in 2028: “I was an Olympic starter in Los Angeles in 1984, and in 2028 things could close with Bernd.” The Tigers have to go to Strasswalchen for the start, in Attemsgasse there will be a duel between Viennese ASKÖ team WAT Stadlau and Vienna Samurai. Unfortunately, another club has dropped out of the Bundesliga

As exciting as the Final Four in Gmunden has always been in recent years, the regular season has been mixed. Pinzgau, which was relegated from last season, is no longer there and PSV Salzburg has also withdrawn its entry. And after the draw, newly promoted Union Graz also got out at the beginning of the new year. This means there are only seven clubs left in the highest league, where there will be no more Legionnaires surprises at the Final Four. Because stars like Olympic champions Lukas Krpalek or former world champion Saeed Mollaei or Belgium’s top man Matthias Casse must have fought at least once in the basic round before they can take the mat at the Final Four. For this purpose, each club is allowed to use an Austrian guest judoka.

The Galaxy head coach said: “They are doing everything to prevent our eleventh title. But we will certainly adapt well to the new regulations.” The Tigers are relying even more on the young this year – for example Klosterneuburg, who recently fought at PSV Salzburg Phillip Aust, who is supposed to strengthen the class up to 73 kilos (not yet Saturday because he is at the European Cup in Dubrovnik at the weekend). Change for that Mathias Czizsek in the 81 kilo category, in which Fasching is number 1 – and Haasmann wants to continue to build up the 20-year-old. “He has now fought four tournaments in the general class, competed twice, was second at the European Open in Györ and fifth at the Grand Prix in Linz. Strong results for him.” The “Mister Bundesliga” is currently training in Antalya with the ÖJV team and should be just as fit (but perhaps tired) as he is on Saturday Movli Borchashvilli, who is the undisputed number 1 champion in the heavyweight division. Who will host Multikraft Wels in his first home fight on May 4th. “There are carnival weight classes there Wachid and Shamil Borchashvili two more who are in front of him. Bernd has to get past them.” The master trainer’s big – and probably final – goal: “I want carnival to come to the 2028 Olympics. Then he can fight there among the five rings, where I was an Olympic participant 40 years ago.” The last mission of the judo guru Haasmann…

The other two Viennese clubs will meet on Saturday (6 p.m., educational campus at Attemsgasse 22). The Viennese ASKÖ team WAT Stadlau welcomes Vienna Samurai. Both teams have their sights set on the Final Four, which both failed to reach last year. “Our boys will start the new season well prepared. We have double, if not triple, numbers in most weight classes. The only problem is the class up to 60kg, so we will get reinforcements from Hungary,” said Stadlaus league manager Alexander Zauner. In 2023 they won the derby 5-2 against the Samurais. For their chairwoman Corina Korner it is a special derby: “We are friendly clubs and even held joint training sessions during Easter week. But you also noticed the rivalry a bit. Given our friendship, I would prefer a 7:7,” says Corina, who is also vice president of the Vienna regional association and general secretary of the ÖJV. The Leopoldstadt team also has, as Korner says, a “pleasantly large squad”. You can look forward to the Vienna Derby!

First Judo Bundesliga, 1st round – Saturday, all matches 6 p.m.: Vienna ASKÖ Team WAT Stadlau – Vienna Samurai (Bildungscampus Attemsgasse 22), Raika Union Flachgau – M&R Galaxy Judo Tigers (Gerhard Dorfinger-Halle, Strasswalchen), ESV Sanjindo Bischofshofen – UJZ Mühlviertel (Hermann Wielander-Halle). – LZ Multikraft Wels against Union Graz was verified 14-0 for the Welsers.

Three Viennese in Teplice

Three Viennese judoka will take to the mat at the Junior European Cup this weekend in Teplice (CZE). The two talents from the Sportunion Karuna Vienna, Yann Ornik (up to 55 kg) and Vardges Ghazaryan (over 90 kg) and the Galaxy heavyweight Luke Angerer (over 90 kilos). It is one of the preparation tournaments for the European Championships in Sofia at the end of June. Afterwards there is a three-day training camp in Teplice. Jacqueline Springer (Vienna Samurai / up to 48 kg), on the other hand, is in action at the Senior European Cup in Dubrovnik.
