CHIVASSO – The fourth round of the salvation group of the Piedmontese Serie C pitted the hosts Pallacanestro Chivasso and Usac Rivarolo against each other. This is the most classic of the Canavese basketball derbies. An even more heartfelt match, given the importance of the two points in terms of the race for salvation, since Chivasso is sadly last with 0 victories under its belt, while Rivarolo arrived at PalaBlatta with a record of one victory and two defeats.
All conditions to expect a tough, intense, low-scoring match full of tension and emotions. Premises that materialized on the playing field, where the two teams faced each other head-on right from the tap-off, favoring full-field man-to-man defenses – which forced the teams to shoot at the limit of the 24″ of play – fighting with intensity on the rebound under both boards, playing on par for good stretches of the match. Even in the second period the theme of the match does not change: Rivarolo maintains an 8-point lead until the 7th minute, then Chivasso comes back to 22-24, but wastes opportunity after opportunity, does not score for 5 consecutive minutes and so Rivarolo finds breathing room by closing the first half of the match at 22-28.
In the third period the guests still seem to be in control of the match thanks to two consecutive triples by Pucci, but Chivasso finally finds fluidity in attack and pushed by Pecchenino (2 triples in a row), Bertino and Villata goes back up to 40-40, missing the free throw of overtaking the siren with Pagetto. Overtaking again by Pecchenino at the start of the last quarter, which is answered by a highly difficult triple from Abrate, who puts the inertia back into Rivarolo’s hands. Abrate, Pucci and Aralla become the offensive ends, while Chivasso relies on Bertino to stay attached to the match until 49-49 with 4′ to go. At this point Rivarolo blocks the area again, Chivasso never scores, while Rivarolo capitalizes on the opponent’s fouls from the line and the three technical whistles given to coach Giardino, Vettori and Greppi and Bertino’s unsportsmanlike call in the final minute. It ends 51-60 for Rivarolo, who remains in the race for salvation, while Chivasso finds itself with its back to the wall and with a foot and a half in Serie D.
