Tsitsipas defeats Ruud to become triple champion in Monte Carlo

MADRID, 14 Abr. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Greek tennis player Stefanos Tsitsipas was proclaimed champion of the Monte Carlo tournament for the third time in his career, after beating the Norwegian Casper Ruud this Sunday in the final (6-1, 6-4).

Tsitsipas regained his punch on familiar ground, a Masters 1,000 that he already won in 2021 and 2022, after a bad start to the season. The Greek is once again a fearsome rival ahead of a dirt tour that culminates in Roland Garros.

After beating Jannik Sinner in the semifinal, Tsitsipas struck down a Ruud who was coming off the best victory of his career, the elimination of number one Novak Djokovic in the semis. The forcefulness of his forehand, a wide variety of service and the support of exceptional footwork made the champion unbeatable.

The Norwegian, however, failed in the final, as has happened in the big fights for titles so far (finalist in three ‘big ones’, two Masters 1,000 with this one and one ATP Finals). It didn’t take long for the decisive match in Monte Carlo to heat up and Tsitsipas took advantage of his break points to sign a resounding 6-1.

The Greek saved every break attempt by his rival, with problems on almost every serve of the second set, and achieved the decisive break that gave the match to the rest at 6-4. Tsitsipas thus lifted the eleventh title in his record and straightened his trajectory, after only winning in Los Cabos last year.
