Players’ association wants due process

The National Basketball Players Association (NBPA), which represents NBA players, released a short statement in response to Porter’s suspension Wednesday afternoon.

Today, the NBA permanently disqualified Jontay Porter for violating the league’s playing rules. The NBPA exists to protect and support the interests of the NBA’s 450 players – both as individual players and as a collective. Compliance with the league’s betting rules is paramount to maintaining the integrity of our athletes and protecting the future of the sport, it reads.

The NBPA will ensure that Jontay has access to the resources he needs during this time, in light of the NBA’s decision. All players, including Jontay, must be given due process and an opportunity to respond to any accusations made against them.

Such a procedure is provided for in the collective agreement between the NBA and the NBPA. This also provides that the sanction chosen will be left to the sole discretion of the commissioner and cannot be the subject of an appeal. It was unclear Wednesday afternoon whether Porter had an opportunity to defend himself to the league.

For his part, the Raptors president was still in shock from the news when he gave his comments to the Associated Press.

He said Wednesday in Toronto, shortly before the NBA announced Porter’s exclusion, that this is not what we want for the [jeune joueur]neither for our team, nor for our league.

My first reaction is obviously surprise, because none of us, I don’t think, saw this coming.

Porter, a 24-year-old center, played 26 games for the Raptors in 2023-24. He played 13.8 minutes, scoring 4.4 points and grabbing 3.2 rebounds on average per game.
