From February to June, months in which high temperatures are recorded, the ozone season is also recorded, which brings with it the declaration of environmental contingencies in the Metropolitan Zone of the Valley of Mexico.
Environmental contingencies are decreed with the purpose of protecting people’s health and reducing the emission of polluting gases.
Can you declare an environmental contingency due to heat?
According to the Ministry of the Environment, an environmental contingency can be declared due to heat. This is because between February and June, high temperatures develop with little cloudiness, in addition to weak winds, which causes greater ozone generation and accumulation in the environment.
Ozone is produced by combustion processes or by the evaporation of solvents or fuels such as gasoline. However, it is not only vehicles that pollute, but also the use of cleaning products, paint and ink; and even gas leaks raise the levels of this substance in the environment.
As there are weak winds during the heat and little cloud cover, ozone is not distributed in the environment, and only accumulates in the atmosphere, quickly reaching 155 parts per billion of ozone or suspended particles in the air.
Given this, the Ministry of the Environment makes the following recommendations both for the hot season and for when there are environmental contingencies in order not to increase the concentration of ozone in the environment:
Use public transportation and reduce the use of private carsTurn off the boiler when not in use, since the pilot also consumes fuel and there is a risk of leakageCover pots and pans when cooking, which allows the heat to concentrate without so much LP gas, which in turn emits less polluting gases. Install solar heaters because they save 70 percent of the gas used to heat water.
