“I am grateful for the friendship she gave me. But I’m even more grateful for their rivalry. When you have a rival you love, it can change your life,” Petkovic wrote.
Petkovic: “Kerber would be the greatest tennis player of all time”
The 36-year-old explained that although she was never jealous of her opponent, she would have liked to have been in Kerber’s shoes when she was at her best. At the peak of her powers, Kerber won both the Australian Open and the US Open in 2016. She also reached the finals at Wimbledon and the Olympics. Petkovic revealed that she was “ecstatic” about Kerber’s title.
In her opinion, her compatriot’s three greatest strengths are her defensive game, her return and, since 2016, her offensive strokes. The 36-year-old described it as the “trifecta of Kerberism”. Petkovic also said: “If tennis were purely a baseline game, Kerber would be the greatest tennis player of all time. Sadly, in tennis you also need a serve.”

Petkovic is injured in the first duel with Kerber
During their professional careers, the two Germans met each other eleven times. Kerber leads the record with 8:3. In this regard, Petkovic wrote humorously: “Three coincidences shine brightly in a night full of horror.”
They played against each other at the German Championships at a young age. According to the 36-year-old, they first dueled at the age of twelve, and Petkovic tore a ligament. “Tearing a ligament was nothing compared to the heartfelt despair that Angie caused you on the tennis court,” said the German.
