The Spanish prosecutor’s office has asked for 30 months in prison for the former president of the Spanish Football Federation Luis Rubiales, for the affair of the non-consensual kiss given to the footballer Jennifer Hermoso during the awards ceremony for Spain’s victory in the Women’s World Cup on August 20 . According to court filings seen by Reuters, Rubiales was accused of sexual assault and coercion for hugging and kissing Hermoso on the mouth, who then reported him. The two charges against him carry maximum sentences of one year and 18 months respectively.
In September 2023 Rubiales resigned from the role of president after receiving strong criticism for the fact, for which he had always denied any responsibility. Subsequently, FIFA, which had already provisionally suspended him, banned him from participating in any football-related activity for three years.
