The Spanish government announced this Thursday the placing under supervision of the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), at the center of an investigation for corruption after having been shaken by the scandal of the forced kiss of its ex-president Luis Rubiales.
“The Spanish government adopted this decision to redress the serious situation in which the RFEF finds itself so that the entity can begin a stage of renewal in a climate of stability”indicated the Superior Sports Council (CSD), an organization dependent on the Ministry of Sports this Thursday.
Concretely, “a supervision, standardization and representation commission created by the CSD” and led by “independent personalities” will exercise “the supervision of the RFEF during the coming months”In “the interest of Spain”candidate for the organization of the 2030 World Cup jointly with Portugal and Morocco, adds the press release.
A corruption investigation shakes the RFEF
Already shaken by the scandal of Luis Rubiales’ forced kiss on world champion Jenni Hermoso last summer, the RFEF is now at the center of a corruption investigation which led to the indictment of the former football strongman Spanish and his interim successor at the head of the Federation, Pedro Rocha. And the Administrative Court of Sport (TAD) estimated, in a recent report, that the latter and his interim management had committed faults “very serious” making decisions that go beyond their skills.
As a reminder, elections for the presidency of the Federation are currently scheduled for May 6. Pedro Rocha is the only candidate to succeed Luis Rubiales.
