Jannik Sinner could take over the top of the world rankings in just a few weeks.

Changes at the top of the world rankings are always something very special. Especially when a player takes over the top position who has not yet held the sun in the tennis world. Jannik Sinner could have this premiere soon.

This is made possible by a simple calculation in tennis arithmetic. Last year, Jannik Sinner, who was unable to compete in the quarterfinals in Madrid due to injury, was eliminated in the second round against Daniel Altmaier and only took 45 points from the clay court Grand Slam. Novak Djokovic won the title and has 2,000 points to defend.

Djokovic and Sinner in Paris with different cushions

At 1130 points, the gap between Djokovic and Sinner is a decent margin, but even a theoretical defeat in the final would mean a loss of 800 points for Djokovic. Jannik Sinner, on the other hand, can only gain.

Previously, both players did not have a big cushion to defend in Rome with 180 (Djokovic) and 90 (Sinner) points. The fight for number one will definitely be reignited in Paris. With Jannik Sinner’s cancellation, Novak Djokovic could temporarily increase his cushion in the Italian capital.
