The Road to Paris: Battle for the Olympic Judo Ticket Begins for Wagner and Böhm

For former judo world champion Anna-Maria Wagner and European champion Alina Böhm, the showdown for the Olympic ticket begins with the European Championships in Zagreb next week. Tokyo Olympic bronze medalist Wagner (Ravensburg) and her challenger Böhm (Heubach) are in third and fourth place in the global qualification rankings for the up to 78 kg class – only one of them is allowed to compete in Paris.

“I feel fit, I have improved and have the feeling that I am approaching my peak. I hope that I can achieve that,” said Böhm, for whom it would be the Olympic premiere, on the occasion of the German squad announcement Zagreb on Wednesday. The decision in the Olympic race will be made there and at the following World Cup in Abu Dhabi (May 19th to 24th).

Because apart from heavyweight Renee Lucht (Hamburg), hardly any DJB judoka can safely plan for Paris, practically the entire best line-up is at the start in Zagreb. Eduard Trippel (Rüsselsheim/90 kg), who scored a coup with silver at the 2021 Olympics in Tokyo, still needs two very good results at the European Championships and World Championships. Currently, Trippel would not be qualified for Paris via the Olympic rankings.

At the previous European Championships in November 2023, Alina Böhm successfully defended her title in Montpellier and won the only gold for the DJB. “It’s time to defend the title again. My goal hasn’t changed, I would like to win the treble,” she said.
