The Rise of Badminton in Rostrenen: The Story of Bad’Club Rostren

Don’t look for him elsewhere: the Little Thumb of French badminton is Rostrenois. This is the Bad’Club Rostren with the same hard core at its head since 2004: Jacques Sibéril, Annick André and Christine Le Goff. “We were lucky to have a generation of young people who were brilliant, talented young shoots who created an atmosphere, but also motivated parents. This miracle generation rose steadily through the ranks, attracting other young people,” recalls Jacques Sibéril, president.

The place to be

The arrival of Xuefei Qi in 2014 marks a turning point. The player, quickly identified as the best French player, takes the club to the top. “From N2, we welcomed foreign players, like Kerill Leonov, who was No. 2 in Ukraine. When you reach such a level, you are inevitably in demand.” And then, over time, over the climbs, the audience began to grow. Badminton matches have become the Saturday attraction in Rostrenen. “The locals realized that it was a very beautiful spectacle. A badminton match is easy to understand, there is a good atmosphere, the players are among the best,” says Jacques Sibéril. Spectators who sometimes travel from far away to attend the matches. “On average, a national match is followed by 300 people,” he continues.

Currently, the Bad’Club has 140 members. The club is present in N1, N2 and the team in D1 aims to move up to the Regional. “We also have the youngest who play in interclubs,” says Jacques Sibéril. The upcoming sporting event for N1 badists is the play-offs on May 4. At the top of their group, they will receive the second of group 2 for access to the Top 12. “They are the elite of French badminton. We were there last year and no Breton club had made it this far before. Unfortunately, we went back down,” rewinds Jacques Sibéril. The president hopes for a victory. “It’s within our reach.”

The next puzzle will be finalizing the budget. “We have a small budget, the other clubs are surprised and wonder how we get there; but it is very difficult, and we will not succeed without the help of communities and sponsors,” assures Jacques Sibéril. The message has gotten through!
