The regular season in the NBA is over and the playoffs are almost upon us. The 16 best teams in the league fight for the NBA trophy. BILD explains when the playoffs start, how they work and who the favorites are.

The play-in tournament is in full swing and the first decisions have already been made. LeBron James (39) and his Los Angeles Lakers won their knockout game against the New Orleans Pelicans and moved into the playoffs in seventh place. The Pelicans can secure last place on Friday night against the Sacramento Kings, who won their playoff against the Golden State Warriors. This means that the dominant franchise of the last ten years has no chance of winning another title. The final playoff spots in the Eastern Conference will be between the Miami Heat, Philadelphia 76ers, Atlanta Hawks and Chicago Bulls.
The first round of the playoffs begins on Saturday (April 20). The teams are divided into Eastern and Western Conference. The best team in a conference plays against the eighth-place team, the second-best team plays against the seventh-place team – and so on. The game is played in a best-of-seven mode. The winners of the conferences are determined within three rounds, who then play the NBA champion in the finals.

When do the NBA Finals start?

Who are the favorites for the title?
The Boston Celtics impressed in the regular season and earned the best record in the league (64-18). They are considered the top favorite in the East. The Milwaukee Bucks have been disappointing this season, but they have one of the best duos in the league with Giannis Antetokounmpo (29) and Damian Lillard (33). The New York Knicks are considered the secret favorite.
In the West, the reigning champions, the Denver Nuggets with Finals MVP Nikola Jokić (29), are the top candidates in the race for the title. But the young Oklahoma City Thunder and the hottest team in the league, the Dallas Mavericks, should also have a say.
