3×3 women fight for their only Olympic chance in Japan

Austria’s 3×3 basketball players are fighting for a place at the Olympic Games in Paris from Friday to Sunday. Eight nations take part in the qualifying tournament, only the winner secures the ticket. Austria will face Brazil, Germany and hosts Japan in the group phase, and the two best in the group will advance to the semi-finals. For the Austrian team it is the only chance to qualify for Paris.

The quartet Inga Orechowa, Alexia Allesch, Rebekka Kalaydjiev and Anja Fuchs-Robetin will tackle the tournament. “Rebekka and Anja have been there for years, and with this experience they will help us. Inga showed how she can play in the Superliga and has proven this repeatedly in her long international career. And Alexia is a great player who has presented herself very well in the last few days,” explained national coach Edin Bavcic.

“It will be a big challenge, but we are very motivated. We are all excited that we have the chance to qualify for Paris. If we could do that, we would shock the world. We only have strong opponents, but it is doable,” said Orechowa, MVP of the women’s Bundesliga final series.
