Kienbaun. The countdown has begun: The Olympic Games in Paris will start in 100 days – and even though Giovanna Scoccimarro is currently well behind her national competitor Miriam Butkereit (Halle) in the qualifying rankings, the Lessien native, who competes for MTV Vorsfelde, wants to continue preserve their chance of a second participation after Tokyo 2021. The next opportunity will be on April 26th at the European Championships in Zagreb (Croatia).

EM brings up to 700 points for the Olympics

The continental championships also bring qualification points, and a European Championship title at least 700 points (the same as for silver at a Grand Slam). This is where the tactics begin. Many factors play a role. How much stress do you put on the athletes in four possible competitions within the next month, what impact do which results have on the positioning in the Olympic rankings? Only the best five results of the last twelve months count towards Olympic qualification. Plus an extra result at the European Championships or Masters. But Scoccimarro can almost save himself the trouble of tactics. After her comeback after the second cruciate ligament tear, she needs top results and points in order to perhaps jump on the Paris bandwagon.

In any case, Scoccimarro feels good. “I will give everything until the end to keep my chances for the Olympics. “It’s important that I stay healthy,” she says about her motivation. In Zagreb, competitor Butkereit is also at the start in the 70 kilogram class. “I want to show good judo and of course have a medal if possible. But I also want to have fun fighting,” said the Halle native about her European Championship goals.

Fine-tuning in Kienbaum

In preparation for the European Championships and the other Grand Slams in Tajikistan and Kazakhstan as well as the World Cup, the final touches were put on the women’s top team at the Federal Performance Center in Kienbaum. The focus was on Randori training, as national coach Claudiu Pusa reported. “We had top partners from ten nations here, as well as the junior national team.” The around 100 athletes on the mat always found top-class opponents in order to prepare well for the upcoming highlights.

After Kienbaum, Scoccimarro will continue training at home before the vice world champion competes for European Championship medals and Olympic points on April 26th.
